Michael J Downie DDS, MD
Dr. Downie was raised in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD and graduated with a D.D.S. from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1996. Dr. Downie received his M.D. from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in 1999. He then completed a one-year internship in general surgery at Baylor University Medical Center and subsequently finished his 6 year oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the Baylor College of Dentistry/Texas A & M University System in 2002.
He joined Drs. Broude, Barthel, and Jenny in 2002 – the practice subsequently changed names in 2003 to become Twin Cities Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Professionally, his passion is excellence in dental implant surgery and bone grafting for his patients. In 2003, he started a dental implant study club for Twin Cities OMS – a professional study club for general dentists and regional specialists to focus on excellence in implant dentistry through high-quality continuing education. He has mentored several general dentists to surgically place dental implants as well. He is a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS), American Dental Association (ADA), Minnesota Dental Association (MDA), and an active member of the Baylor Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Alumni Association (BOMSAA). He is currently President of the Minnesota Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (MSOMS). He is also serving as President-Elect of the St. Paul District Dental Society (SPDDS). Dr. Downie is proud to continually volunteer his time through the Union Gospel Mission dental clinic in St. Paul, Give Kids a Smile, Project Homeless Connect, Donated Dental Services and is the former committee chair of the 2006/2007 Midwinter Meeting of the SPDDS.
Dr. Downie is married and has three children. His personal interests include coaching youth baseball and supporting his children’s sports teams, playing the piano and trumpet, whitewater rafting, fly-fishing, biking and golfing when not busy with the other activities.
